Evacuated Tube Solar collector with Heat Pipe

Traditionally, solar hot water systems have consisted of solar water heaters with integrated storage tanks, which sit prominently on the roof for all to see. More recently, the technology has progressed and we are now able to offer low profile pressurized solar collectors with separated storage tanks which can be located in discreet interior locations such as roof space, a garage, a boiler room etc. This allows the solar collector to be mounted with far less visibility.

The Solar Sunlite range of solar water heaters also include a range of split type systems consisting of solar water heaters that are independent from the storage tanks. These solar collectors consist of solar evacuated tubes with integrated state-of-the-art heat pipes with advanced heat fins designed for high, mains pressure hot water.

How does it works?

Solar rays pass through the glass tube to heat a copper heat pipe. Inside the heat pipe a non-toxic liquid carries the heat to the top of the collector unit where it is transferred through a manifold to your water heating system. The round tube configuration maximizes the solar collection area, whilst minimizing reflection, from sunrise to sunset.

Unlike the integrated solar water heaters listed above, this system does not heat the water directly within the evacuated vacuum tubes. Instead, a sealed copper ‘heat pipe’ transfers the heat via convection of its internal heat transfer fluid to a ‘hot bulb’ that indirectly heats a copper manifold within the header. The heat pipes are inserted into specially adapted copper sockets inside the solar manifold. Thereafter the glass evacuated solar tubes are inserted over the heat pipes and secured to the manifold and frame.

Again in this system the solar evacuated tubes are made of borosilicate glass, which is strong and has a high transmittance for solar irradiation. In order to reduce the convection heat lost, the glass tubes are evacuated to vacuum pressure of less than 10-3 Pa.

Once installed the Solar Sunlite evacuated tube solar collector system should last indefinitely. The solar manifold is wrapped in 50mm of Glass-Wool and as there is no water in the tubes, it is frost protected. There is no need for complicated anti-freeze heat exchange systems.

The Solar Sunlite collectors are available in a 20 or 30 tube collector system. Our 20 tube collector manifold is suitable for a 200 Liters cylinder and a household of 4 to 5 people, while the 30 tube solar collector suits the larger families of 6-8 occupants with a cylinder around 300 Liters

The solar collectors can be extended in multiple sets and linked together for commercial properties such as hotels, schools, restaurants, bars, clubs …….and in other industries where there is a large demand for the supply of hot water

Heat Pipes

In addition to the evacuated tubes the copper heat pipe is also vital to the performance of the collector. The heat pipe is an essential link in the heat transfer chain. If this link is poor quality then the efficiency of the whole system will be compromised, regardless of how good the evacuated tubes are. Our unique solar collectors featuring the latest technology in heat pipes with flexible fins are the most advanced solar system on the market gives the highest performance compared to most European suppliers.

In this system the heat pipe tubes are inserted into a small diameter header manifold, which contains a reduced quantity of water of around 1.5 liters. This allows very efficient collection of even the smallest amount of energy, which can then be stored in a well-insulated tank. The panels can then be situated anywhere and cause the least visual impact on pitched roof installations.

The heat pipe, which is a copper insert inside the vacuum tubes, is in itself a hollow tube, with a partial vacuum inside. In this instance the vacuum is not for insulation purposes, but to reduce the boiling temperature of the fluid inside. The fluid boils at approximately 30 C and the vapor rapidly rises to the bulb at the very top of the tube. It then condenses as the water in the tank releasing the heat energy cools it and returns to the bottom to once again repeat the process.

Our collectors can operate with low, medium and high-pressure water systems. Also the ease of interconnectivity means that 2 or more panels connected in series can cater for larger households. . This system allows greater flexibility and also commonly in use in under floor heating and swimming pool heating

Typical Installation

Notes on Installation

It is recommended that the solar water heaters are installed in a place where there is no obstruction or obstacles restricting the adequate penetration of UV rays or sunshine.
The solar water heaters must be installed on a firm surface.
It is recommended that the tube runs be minimized in order to avoid heat loss during usage.
It is recommended that all pipes be adequately insulated with suitable insulation.

Care should be taken on installation of the vacuum tubes.

Deciding the Direction and Angle of Installation

The angle and direction of installation is also of great importance, as it will affect the efficiency of the solar collector. Naturally you want the collector to receive the maximum amount of sunlight each day and throughout the year. As a general rule if you are in the Northern Hemisphere then the collector should face South and if you are in the Southern Hemisphere then the collector should face north.

Please refer to the following sketch

The angle of the installation depends on the latitude, for example:
-------- Melbourne, Australian, 37° South lat, so the heat collector should be installed face to 37 ° North lat.
-------London, UK, 51° North lat, so the heat collector should be installed face to the 51° South lat.

Working Station

These systems are particularly good for those who are not concerned with achieving a high water pressure supply. In any event, these systems can also be retro fitted with booster water pumps that will increase the water pressure in line with the mains water pressure.

Typical Installation With Custom Work Station

Separated Solar Water Tanks

We generally stock single and twin coil solar water tanks in a range of 200 Litres and 300 Liters. We are able to get all other sizes by order.

Certification

Please note that the range of Solar Sunlite products are manufactured in accordance with ISO9002, and BS EN

Solar Controller: Essential for efficient use of Solar Heating

The solar controller is an essential part of the solar heating system, in all but gravity-fed systems where the Solar Collector is situated lower than the hot water cylinder, and thermo-syphoning effects circulation. In all other systems, it will be necessary to use a controller to switch on the pump when the panel is hotter than the hot water storage cylinder. The controller may also be configured to circulate the water to heat the panel in the event that the solar collector becomes dangerously close to freezing. This will only happen in exceptionally cold weather, and will represent a negligible energy drain.
